Germany proposes “platform solidarity tax”
Germany’s newly appointed Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer has said that his ministry is preparing a legislative proposal to introduce a 10% tax on the sales revenues of large American online platforms operating within its borders (which he called “a platform solidarity tax”). He also said he was seeking talks with platform operators (whom he accused of “cunning tax evasion”) to explore alternative solutions like “voluntary contributions.”
